Australia's inland rivers face many problems including rising
water tables and salt loads, sediment from erosion, nutrient and other substance
pollution (eg. mine run-off, organic wastes). These problems are not limited to
one particular area but occur across the nation and resources are needed to
address their causes.)
The Natural Heritage Trust through its National
Rivercare Program represents a significant investment in activities that will
improve the health of Australia's river systems outside the Murray-Darling Basin
(a parallel program, Murray-Darling 2001 looks after rivers within the
basin).

Waterwatch
Waterwatch is a
national community water monitoring program funded by the Commonwealth
Government's Natural Heritage Trust. Waterwatch enables Australians to become
invovled in the monitoring and managment of waterwatys in their catchment. The
program aims to build community understanding of water quality issues, and to
encourage monitoring groups to undertake constructive actions to rectify water
quality problems.
